Croghan News Update: Community Highlights & Upcoming Events

By: Calvin Campany

News about our ice-cream was scooped up for publication recently! Croghan’s very own Good Ol’ Wishy’s has earned recognition in a recent Hudson Valley Post article, which highlighted “9 New York Ice Cream Shops with Massive Cones It’d Take Two to Eat.” The article praised Good Ol’ Wishy’s for its Adirondack-sized ice cream cones and nostalgic atmosphere. The article says, “this beloved ice cream parlor invites visitors to step back in time while enjoying their favorite ice cream delights perched on classic bar stools.” Congratulations to Charlotte and Karl Schweitzer for this well-deserved honor!

Families are invited to enjoy a day of sleigh rides at Trixie-Belle Farm 7548 Snell Road, New Bremen on March 15th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hosted by Tom and Nancy Kovach, the event will raise funds to help cover repair costs for the Lowville Methodist Church kitchen, which was damaged by flooding last summer. The Kovachs, long-time church members, generously offered their draft horses for this special occasion. Donations will be accepted on-site, and chili, soup, snacks, hot chocolate, and coffee will be available for purchase. Bring your friends and neighbors for a memorable family outing while supporting a great cause!

For more than two decades, the Meyer family has been a steadfast supporter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, turning personal loss into a mission to fight cancer and support those affected by the disease. The family’s dedication to the cause stems from the loss of George Meyer, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1975 at the age of 45. At the time, there were no available treatments for his cancer, and the absence of hospice services left his wife to raise six children on her own. Since then, cancer has continued to impact the Meyer family, claiming the lives of other relatives and friends. The Meyer family first participated in Relay for Life events in the early 2000s at Watertown High School before transitioning to Lewis County’s event — a location that felt more like home for many of their relatives. Their team, fittingly named “Meyer and More,” represents not only family members spread across multiple states but also the friends and neighbors who have joined in their fight against cancer. “Over the years, I’ve struggled with whether we are truly making an impact,” one family member shared. “But then I attend Relay and see the faces of survivors who are still with us because of the funds we’ve raised for cancer research — it’s clear that we are making a difference.” The family’s commitment has not wavered, supporting both cancer research and hospice services, which were unavailable during their father’s battle. Through their ongoing participation in Relay for Life, the Meyer family continues to honor their loved ones while helping to create a future with better treatments and more survivors. The Meyer-N-More Relay for Life team are hard at work raising funds for cancer research. Gather your friends for the BUNCO to “BUST” Cancer Tournament on Sunday, March 30, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Dionne-Rumble Post 7227 (668 West End Ave., Carthage, NY). Doors open at 12:30 p.m., with games starting at 1:00 p.m. A $20 donation per person secures your spot to play and includes snacks. No prior playing experience is necessary, and cash prizes will be awarded based on a percentage of the door. Join this lively event and help support the fight against cancer!

A heartfelt thank you to the Northern New York Community Foundation for their generous $1000 donation to the Croghan Food Pantry. Since 1929, The Northern NY Community Foundation has been investing and improving the quality of life for all in communities across Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis counties. The funds will help purchase much-needed supplies, benefiting Croghan families in need. Your support makes a difference in our community!

The Croghan Volunteer Fire Department conducted a mock snowmobile accident training exercise recently, simulating a collision between a snowmobile and a trail groomer. The drill aimed to enhance emergency response skills and preparedness for winter trail incidents. To navigate the snow-covered trails, the department utilized its UTV outfitted with tracks for winter use. This versatile vehicle can be converted with tires during the summer months to respond to a variety of rescue situations and brush fires. The training session was attended by 16 members of the department, who practiced rescue procedures and coordination in challenging winter conditions. The Croghan Volunteer Fire Department extends its gratitude to the Long Pond Sno Sled Club for providing a groomer for the exercise, reinforcing the importance of community partnerships in emergency preparedness.
